My mom was similar to the mom in this story. She didn't want me watching/reading Harry Potter as a child because it was "demonic." She also held the same opinion for Pokemon (though she had no issue with Avatar, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Sabrina the Teenage Witch or Twilight). Because of this, I didn't read the series until I was 14 and she realized I was going to read whatever the hell I pleased. I think a lot of the people who hold this opinion haven't actually read the books. They're fantastic and obviously fiction. I'd never noticed the biblical parallels before but I'll be sure to point them out to my mom next time she complains about HP lol.
